The current business model for artist success in the turbulent world of tube-deployed media is, apparently, requiring at least 1000 'true fans' and then a long tail of sometimes fans/purchasers.

Managing to get a review from a popular website could be the major break for most artists, these days. It's easy to follow links back to purchase direct from the artist's myspace or equivalent.

the larger recording companies only care about the artists that can sell millions of cds. they invest in new talent only looking for that one big breakthrough.

plenty of other smaller artists have done something similar to reznor before, but when someone on his scale does it, it makes it very obvious the existing business model is fucked.
