wow. Randall Munroe puts some coordinates and a time in an XKCD strip. The time was some months in the future, the location was a park in Cambridge, MA. That's all he did. The result? Over a thousand people turned up, just to see what was there, and what would happen. In case nothing was planned, they all brought their own entertainment to make sure something did happen.

Seriously - a thousand people saw the coordinates in a webcomic and said "what the heck, I wonder what's there". At least one person (mentioned in the local paper writeup) flew from the UK to be there.

Just, wow. The XKCD writeup is here, a local newspaper report is here, and the flickr group with photos is here (and here.)

And if you're not reading it already, XKCD is syndicated to LJ as [livejournal.com profile] xkcd_rss

I totally *knew* that was going to happen, the second I saw those co-ordinates and the date. I wish I'd thought to go there and do a story on it. Clever clogs.

The UK is nothing.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] insomnius travelled the furthest of anyone there, all the way from Melbourne.

Check out her write up here.
