googlevision

So google maps now has better resolution satellite image of Melbourne. Well, parts of Melbourne, anyway.

Here for instance, you can see where I work (The Teahouse), nestled in between Jeff's Shed and the Home Of All That Is Evil. Zoom out a little, though, and you can see they've missed pretty much all the south eastern suburbs, not even getting all of the CBD. There's also no map data (click on 'Map' in the top right corner for a blank screen).

Still, it's a start.

[update: Still - Melbourne got at least some coverage, compared to, say Sydney (that's the bridge and the opera house, and that's as good as it gets so far). Brisbane gets hi-res, though, as does Surfer's Paradise (which, I was surprised to note, does not in fact appear to suck up to a low orbital level). Canberra gets hi-res coverage, as well.]

Goddammit, the cemetary is covered by clouds.

That is so cool! I can even make the joke about being able to see my house from here. :)

I fail to get it to do any sort of search that finds locations in Melbourne

Andrew got a much tighter shot of our new flat (or at least, the building it's in) on the outer fringes of Sydney, so goodness knows why the centre is so bad.

Actually, they just seem to have really bad data for the Harbour. See here for a comparison: the south of the city centre is much better.
