Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says the Federal Government has offered Schapelle Corby the free services of two Australian QCs to help during the appeal process.

[...]

"The Australian Government has followed the Schapelle Corby case closely and we obviously feel sorry for Schapelle Corby and her family at this very difficult time," he said.

"When Australians travel overseas and they get into trouble, we do what we can to provide consular assistance for them."

Oh really? You do what you can? That'd be why you let Hicks and Habib rot in Club Guantanamo for so long. And, in case someone feels the need to trot out the "but they're terrorists" crap -- if they're terrorists, fucking charge them. If you can't charge them, shut the fuck up.

Why does Alexander Downer feel the need to protect drug smugglers?

It's interesting that we give so much attention to this particular case and are shocked by the sentence when there are some people who have been detained in Australia indefinitely for illegally entering the country...

It's selective application of compassion, but I'd prefer that to no compassion whatsoever.
