one last one for the day...

Sony's Playstation 3 is going to cost money. A lot of money. Sony's response?

[Sony's goal is] "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

Boggle. Why am I reminded of the French restaurant L'Idiot in the film L.A. Story (with Patrick Stewart enacting the New Cruelty Regime)? "You can't have the PS3. Not with two controllers, not with your financials!"

Sony thinks they can shit on a plate and gamers will eat it.

I think Sony could be in for a rude awakening.

I think a lot will say "pass the sauce" :)

Yes, but a lot fewer than before. If Sony don't lose a hefty chunk of market share this generation I'll be mightily surprised.

Whereas Nintendo think they can just Wii in a cup and gamers will drink it.

Sorry. Had to be done.

Silly people leave themselves logged in on my computer will they??

eg I'm not sevjun and that was my comment

Funny pun, but Nintendo has been behind on market share for quite some time, so they are working damn hard to bring out an innovative console unlike any that has come before, in order to win back gamers from Sony and also to win over people who have previously not played console games.

Sony on the other hand are just releasing yet another Playstation with high-end specs (and the pricetag to go with). Even the name of their console is the epitome of stagnation.

I agree. If I was in the market for a console I would probably go Wii myself. If I was in the market for anything gamewise it would more likely be a handheld. Nintendos games just look like more fun, especially if you're not into the frag everything in sight thing.

Oh, and Anthony, don't wait for me to buy one to bring the price down. I absolutely refuse to buy a PS3 at $999.

And yet gamers will spend this and more on a PC that - while it *could* be used for other things - invariably isn't. I'm not saying it's the right tactic for them, and it certainly smacks of arrogance, but I think the outcome is far from a foregone conclusion.

[identity profile] hege-mon.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but PC games shit all over console games.

[identity profile] strangehours.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. I've yet to see a console port of nethack.

And that really is the most unbelievably arrogant, snobbish thing to say about an unlaunched product. "Yes it's ridiculously expensive in its target market, but in a good way."
