Oct. 2nd, 2006 03:49 pmThe loss of hundreds of Qantas IT jobs to India looks like going ahead with the airline saying skills needed to upgrade its systems are no longer available in Australia.

He told AAP that Qantas had to replace its ageing IT systems and the skills needed to do that in a cost effective way were not available in Australia.
Sigh. What a bogus argument. "The skills aren't available". "Well, OK, they are, but it's cheaper to ship the jobs overseas".
Ok, fine. Qantas is a business, and this is what businesses do. What's particularly offensive about Qantas doing it is that they still expect all sorts of special treatment from the Federal Government as the Magic Super-Special Icon Of Australia. Witness their hysterical lobbying whenever it looks like another airline might want to start flying the massively overpriced and protected Australia-US route.
