Community Cup Results
Jun. 25th, 2006 06:03 pmTime, once again, for the annual football match - the 13th Sacred Heart Mission Community Cup. Once again, between the PBS/RRR Megahertz and the Espy Rockdogs.
It was a totally beautiful day - sunny and warm for most of it. Much beer was consumed, many dogs were fussed over, lots of small children running around. I love these sorts of events. There's a wonderful social feel to it all. The players running around, displaying far more enthusiasm than skill. The crowd, applauding the occasional moments of vague skill by the players. The after-match awards, featuring a lot of players with a fag hanging out of their mouths and a tin of VB in one hand. And of course, the farcical commentary, which got funnier1 as more beer was poured into the commentators over the course of the game.
I'm not sure if they had a lockout - I know there was a queue to get in later on, letting new people in as others left. I suspect the Mission probably raised quite a bit of dough (last year, it raised $165K for them - awesome work).
Aside from the mission raising quite a bit of money, comedy was the real winner today. "sport" really only gets a prize of the "every child wins a prize - here's your rubber snake on bit of elastic" variety.
For a bunch of people there it was the first time they'd ever seen Aussie Rules played. To be honest, I much prefer to see something like this than see a professional team play. Much, much more fun. And such a wonderful crowd experience.
The final result, by the way, was a draw. 5-5-35 apiece. Given the total lack of physical fitness displayed by both sides (not that I can talk!) this seemed as good a result as any.
Anyway, keep an eye out for it again next year - it's a fun way to kill an afternoon.
