Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, on Bill Maher's Real Time last weekend:

Bush speaks to the audience as if they’re idiots. I think the reason he does that is because that’s the way these issues were explained to him.

So you've all seen the signs saying "plan your trip during the commonwealth games" (with the unwritten footnote of "fuck you, we know you don't care about the damn things, but you're going to be dicked around anyway")

You go to the vicroads website, and click on the "Commonwealth Games Road Closures" link. You end up here:

The new Traffic conditions and travel time site is optimized for IE version 5.0 and later.

In response to user feedback we have brought back the old travel information applications for those people who use other browsers.

This is an interim solution and we are targeting to have the new application compatible with other browsers by mid March. Once this is in place, the old application will no longer be available.

You can access the individual applications by choosing one of the links below that will bring up a separate window. To access any of the other applications, you will need to close that window and then chose one of the other links below.

1. Freeway Travel Time Information - updated every 10 minutes
2. Roadworks and On Road events (metropolitan & rural) - updated every hour
3. Tow Truck Allocation Information - updated every 10 minutes
4. Traffic Alerts - updated every hour

Go on - try and find the damn commonwealth games road closures here. Or don't - because I just trawled it, and the information is not there. I asked a friend with a windows box to look it up for me, and the goddammed triathlon is running through my suburb. I wonder if I'll be forced to buy a ticket to be on the street nearby? Isn't there a legal requirement for Vic Gov websites to be accessible to people using screenreading browsers? (Although how many blind people need to use the Vicroads website for driving information is an open question :-)

And yes, normally I don't drive, but we're in the middle of a show - I have to drive into work so I can get out to the theatre straight after work.

Anyway, to summarise. Vicroads, you are utter cockheads. Thank you for making the Commonwealth Games that little bit more aggravating for me.
