merry fitzmas
Oct. 29th, 2005 08:01 pmFor those of you who (like me) follow the blood-sport of US politics this year, yesterday was Fitzmas Day. Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald brought 5 indictments against Vice President Cheney's most important aide, "Scooter" Libby. This is over the extremely long-running CIA leak case, where White House staff took revenge against an inconvenient opponent by outing his wife as an undercover CIA agent. A big no-no, but very very hard to prove.
Fortunately for those of us who wanted to see these fuckers go down, Scooter lied his arse off to the FBI investigators and to the Grand Jury investigating the case. Very stupid - I can only assume he thought no-one would really investigate it, and that his lies wouldn't get him in trouble. Oops. Bad call - he's now facing (potentially) 30 years in prison for the charges against him.
I watched the prosecutor's press conference announcing the charges, and I have to say, I'm impressed. He really came across as someone who really really cares about getting the right result, and also came across as someone you really don't want to fuck around with.
All in all, a real ray of sunshine for the US political system. With most of the rest of the US system totally screwed, it's nice to see someone doing their job, and doing it well.
