the office (US edition)
Mar. 25th, 2005 08:53 pmSo the americans have made a version of The Office, starring Steve Carrell (ex Daily Show) in Ricky Gervais' role. It's not terrible (unlike, say the US versions of Coupling or Red Dwarf), but it is kinda pointless. They've pretty much just transplanted the entire show, with only very minor alterations to the script to yankify it. And Carrell's version of the boss doesn't have anywhere near the comedy/pain brilliance of the original.
On the plus side, they didn't add a laughtrack, which was what I was expecting them to do. And they also stuck with more or less ordinary looking people for the actors, rather than picking gorgeous models.
All in all, though, I wouldn't recommend wasting time to download it. Get the DVDs of the original and watch them instead. And if you've not seen the UK version of The Office, do so. Really. Unless, of course, you're one of those people that needs a laugh track to tell you when a joke just happened. For you, I'm sure there's DVDs of Everybody Loves Raymond or something.
[update Jesus H Christ. I mean, it's bad enough that Everybody Loves Raymond is polluting our brains with it's totally insipid non-comedy, but it turns out that the lead actress from the show is now attempting to use her ill-gotten "fame" to attempt to intervene in the Schiavo case. Just another reason to avoid watching it, I guess.]
