highlights and lowlights
Apr. 12th, 2004 12:19 pmSo the definite lowlight was ATA screwing me around so that I missed my flight out of SFO. Bastards. In particular, they left my bag on the plane, so it went on without me. This is a lot naughty of them, they're not meant to do this. I ended up breaking out the extremely cold and pissed off voice when I was changing planes in Chicago to try and find where my bags had gone -- the word you never want to hear used about your luggage is "probably". "Probably" doesn't cut it, _where_ _is_ _my_ _luggage_. There were also a couple of japanese girls on holidays in the same boat - they were pretty much in tears. Much staring and very calmly and clearly explaining that _I_ _want_ _to_ _know_ _where_ _our_ _bags_ _are_, _right_ _now_ and it was sorted.
Highlights - hm, probably the last few days in New York. More fun than should possibly be legal.
I'm not sure whether I prefer SF or NY as cities - they're both very very cool. SF would probably be more fun to live in, but both were great to visit. Still not sure I'd want to live there, though.
SouthWest were far and away the best of the airlines I flew in the US. Cheap and cheerful and organised. Absolutely no fucking about, everything just worked.
Another lowlight: The genius in our room at the HI in DC who had sleep apnia (or whatever it's called) and had the little monitor that beeped when he stopped breathing - ARGH. I was wrecked enough getting about 5 or 6 hours sleep a night as it was, being woken up a couple of times every night by this fuckwit's little beeping thing was almost enough to make me want to put a pillow over his face and fix his problem properly.
The conference itself was a hell of a lot of fun - I wish I could remember more of it. The reception of my talk was extremely gratifying and ego-boosting, and that's always good.
Meeting the OSAF people was also a real kick. I hope/think they got as much out of it as I did - talking to a couple of them afterwards, it seems like it.
