So my latest excuse for no free time is close to starting it's run. We're putting on The Laramie Project, an amazing play about the Matthew Shepard case in Wyoming in 1998.

I'm doing the lights, sound, video and general projections madness. This show has pushed me even further than I thought was possible, but it looks fantastic. 8 actors (including [livejournal.com profile] thag), something like 65 roles between them. It promises to be an amazing show. I've built all sorts of software to control the setup - I'll be writing that up on my other blog once the show's done.

As usual, it's on at STAG
Strathmore Community Hall, Cnr Napier and Loeman St, Strathmore

In October 1998, a 21-year old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left to die - tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Wyoming. His bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay.

The Laramie Project is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink, and the heights of compassion of which we are also capable.

This play premiered in 2000 in Denver and has been performed in various towns and cities in the USA, including in Laramie itself in November 2002. The play’s success led to HBO Films commissioning a film version in 2002, scripted and directed by Moisés Kaufman. The play has begun to be used in some US schools to teach about prejudice and tolerance, and is also a text in many English schools.

Kris Weber’s cast includes Peter Prenga, Carolyn Cusack, Jeanne Snider, Wil Greenway, Hannah Williams, Kate Mulqueen, Drew Mason and Ivan Nevill, each of whom plays several different characters.
